It happens all the time. My ex totaled his bike first time out. He had borrowed his brothers helmet and they were on their way to buy a helmet. He had never ridden a bike before. Once I started riding, I realized how important it is to practice before getting on the road and thought what an idiot my ex was to get on a bike and think he could just ride away. He has a HD now and has dropped it twice that I know of. Once was right in front of our daughter that had told him not to go out alone. He doesn't wear a helmet and she almost saw his head get run over by a van.
